It’s back to school time again, and we here at Wolfram|Alpha know that a new school year can be expensive for both students and parents. Books, clothes, food, computers—it can all add up. That is why we’re giving away free stuff! Over the next two weeks, we will be giving away Wolfram|Alpha merchandise, such as T-shirts, mugs, and our apps, through our Twitter account. In addition to the two weeks of daily giveaways, there is also a chance to win an iPad 2 filled with our apps by participating in the Big Spikey on Campus Contest.

Big Spikey on Campus

Twitter Giveaways

Each weekday until September 15, we will announce what you can win and how to win it between 9 and 10am CDT, via our Twitter. Daily challenges may include anything from retweeting our message to answering a question about Wolfram|Alpha. We will announce that day’s winners between 4 and 5pm CDT. All winners will be chosen by the Wolfram|Alpha Team.

Prizes will include Wolfram|Alpha T-shirts, mugs, iPhone cases, our apps, and more. Each winner will be ineligible to win any any further prizes as part of our Twitter giveaways, but they are still able to participate in our:

Big Spikey on Campus Contest

Want an iPad 2 filled with all of our apps? Good news, we are giving one away! To participate, cut out the provided Spikey and take a picture of the Spikey(s) on your campus. This could be on your quad, with your favorite professor, with your mascot, or an entire classroom full of Spikeys. We want to see your campus represented in the submissions, so be sure to be creative about showing your school spirit. The more inventive the entries, the better!

Big Spikey

Submit your photos by posting on Twitter or Tumblr using the hashtag #WolframBSOC. Only submissions with the correct hashtag will be accepted. Participants may submit entries until 5 pm CDT on September 16. The winners will be chosen at the contest’s conclusion and will be based on the subjective creative evaluation of the Wolfram|Alpha Team. The Wolfram|Alpha Team will announce the grand-prize winner, who will receive the iPad 2, through a blog post on September 20. In addition, 10 runners-up will each receive a Wolfram|Alpha T-shirt and a Course Assistant App of their choice.

Please click here for the complete rules and regulations. Good luck, everyone! We can’t wait to see what creative ways you will use Spikey!

My school doesn’t start until September 22nd and we cannot move in until the 18th. Can the deadline for this contest be extended?

We cannot extend the deadline for the contest. You don’t have to be on campus to enter.

You could take a photo of you and the Big Spikey with your school’s colors or as you’re packing to head back to campus. Just be creative!

Say I didn’t exactly want to cut out the spikey, and had a far more creative way of producing it. Would that be acceptable?

Are we only allowed to use this specific pdf and size? I would like to print it out slightly larger (about 150%) and use that. Is that ok?

ALSO: It’s a little unclear in the rules. It seems we can submit multiple entries?

Posted by David September 12, 2011 at 2:20 am

@ silvascientist – Not a problem at all! Perfectly acceptable.

@ David – Feel free to print the spikey out larger! You may also enter multiple times.

I just saw on Twitter that some people are posting dozes of images … is this allowed?

Posted by Tomas September 16, 2011 at 2:17 pm

Yes, multiple entries are allowed. Everyone has an equal shot at winning regardless of their number of entries.
